Dear CABY Rider Partners,
At CABY, we say PROUDLY, SOUTH AFRICA, which have become our focus, but more the WESTERN CAPE. On the 25th of May 2026, we are celebrating all of AFRICA, as we believe our entire continent to be known, but do we ever ask, who named our continent? and what other names could she have been known through-out her Historical journeys of us, her Human Race.
This morning listening to the radio, I heard a message from two proud parents welcoming their 4th child, and they gave him a very “particular” name. The radio called them and it was discovered that it was the first three of their children who concluded on the name of the 4th baby.
As the Author of my first write, ANCIENT DATE LINE, and before I start my chatter about CABY, I had often wondered if we ever thought about the origin of the name of our Continent. I hope, trust, and ask that you will take a walk with me through our ages of time to get to know the many names our Continent were known by, the few I found anyway.
The BERBERS, meaning IMAZIGHEN, ‘FREE MEN.’ They roamed the Northern Regions of our Continent from around 10 000 BCE (Before Current Era), they had a word ‘ifri,’ meaning CAVE. Then around 200 BCE, the Romans conquered the Northern Regions and they, may I say ‘stole,’ lets say ‘took,’ 😊 the word ‘ifri’ and replaced the ‘i’ for an ‘A’ and called the region ‘Afri.’ Around 601 – 701 CE (Current Era) the ARABIC LANGUAGE ‘adapted’ the Latin word ‘Afri’ to AFRICA, into what is known the Phonetic pronunciation of IFRIQIYA.
IFRIQIYA, an Arabic name, for the then Historical Northern Region of the Continent. Tunisia, Eastern Algeria and West Lybia (Tripolitnia). During ancient times, the word IFRIQIYA meant ‘PLACE OF THE PEOPLE,’ modern day it simply means AFRICA, a name that is all encompassing of our CONTINENT and truly THE PLACE OF OUR PEOPLE.
Over the centuries ‘AFRICA’ expanded from the Northern Regions of OUR Continent to the SOUTHERN TIP OF AFRICA – THIS MONTH WE CHOSE TO CELEBRATE AND PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE ‘IN’ AFRICA…
LET’S DRIVE AFRICA SAFER, LETS DRIVE CABY
With much appreciation TEAM CABY
